Feminist Space as Resistance and Reclamation

In a time when public space is fiercely contested and feminist voices are often met with backlash, the exhibition “Taking Space is a Feminist Act” at Galerie im Saalbau doesn’t just enter the conversation—it redraws its boundaries. Curated by Clara von Schwerin, the exhibition explores the transformative force of queer-feminist spatial practices. By focusing on artists and collectives who reclaim, disrupt, and reimagine space as a tool for resistance, care, and visibility, it challenges the assumption that space is neutral. It isn’t. And the act of taking it—especially for women, queer, and marginalized voices—is profoundly feminist.

A large vertical banner with the slogan “taking space is a feminist act” hangs prominently on a scaffolded building, juxtaposed with a colorful artwork—visibly asserting feminist presence in urban public space.</p>

Feminist Art as Living Praxis

This is not a passive exhibition. It breathes. A series of events activate the gallery space and invite the public to participate in the feminist discourse beyond aesthetics:

  • 📣 May 16, 2025: Queer-feminist perspectives on space – Opening with Critical Entries and LIVErary

  • 🎭 June 28, 2025: Performance by Nicola Kötterl during 48h Neukölln

  • 📚 July 12, 2025: Text circle & reading session with Critical Entries

  • 🗣️ July 13, 2025: Finissage and curatorial tour

These gatherings turn the gallery into what feminist theory calls a “counterpublic”—a space where alternative voices can speak, clash, and connect. It’s a feminist act in motion.

Feminist Futures Are Spatial Futures

“Taking Space is a Feminist Act” is a collective proposition. It imagines a world where feminist presence is not tolerated but foundational. Where taking up space isn’t exceptional, but expected.
